Recipes

Can I use one of your recipes on my blog/web site?

Yes, of course. You can certainly share one of my recipes on your blog or web site as long as you link back to www.bigapplecurry.com and identify Big Apple Curry as the source of the recipe. Even if I’ve adapted someone else’s recipe and have indicated so, you should still reference me as the source and note that I have adapted the recipe accordingly.

What is an ‘adapted’ recipe exactly?

It is perfectly fine to feature or showcase someone’s wonderful chicken pot pie recipe that’s already perfect as is. You  can post the recipe on your blog or web site by clearly indicating it was ‘adapted’ from [enter web site/cookbook/source here]. Attribution is key. Accurate attribution is paramount. Here’s the clearest definition I’ve found from Food Blogging for Dummies by Kelly Senyei (Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2012):

  • Adapted from: An adapted recipe originates from another recipe and you’ve made minor modifications to the ingredient list or method of preparation
  • Inspired by: You create a recipe based upon another recipe, dish, or technique that inspired you. Rather than make a few minor substitutions, you use different ingredients and a different method of preparation from the originating work.

So are Big Apple Curry’s recipes copyrighted?

Yes, they are. According to United States copyright law, an ingredients list is not copyrighted, however, ingredients + explanation + background + directions are all copyrighted. You cannot simply copy my recipe in its entirety and pass it off as your own without violating U.S. copyright law.

Photos

Who takes photos for Big Apple Curry?

I take all the photos (with the exception of one post for which we purchased stock images). I’m not a professional photographer, and barely an amateur one. I’ve never taken a photography course, but today my husband Sean suggested I might want to look into it. For all the photos you see, I’ve used my BlackBerry or my iPhone 4S. I shoot all photos in natural light. In my experience, the light is best in Harlem around 4pm ET.

Can I use one of your photos on my blog/web site?

Yes, you certainly can, but just like the rule for recipes above, if you would like to share one of my photos on your blog or web site, please link back to www.bigapplecurry.com and clearly indicate the source is Big Apple Curry.

So are Big Apple Curry’s photos copyrighted too?

Yes, they are. If you would like to use the photos for commercial purposes, you need to contact me and purchase a photo.

    Ina,
I wrote once before about how great your 5-10-5 rule was. I’m barely beginning, but enjoying it.
You need to write a book. I’m serious. Indian cooking stumps most people in their tracks. they’re bewildered and stunned.
    And you make it easy.
I would buy your book in heartbeat. ThE book should be THE 5-10-5 BASICS OF INDIAN COOKING.
    Or something to that effect.
Get it to an agent or publisher.
